ZTE announces super-slim quad-core Grand Era U985

ZTE announced a new handsets for China called the Grand Era U985 today. It's boasting a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720 display, an 8 megapixel camera, and an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Although ZTE is touting the Grand Era U985 as "the world's slimmest quad-core smartphone" at an average 8.6 mm thickness, it's done out by the recently-announced LG Optimus G, which is only 8.45 mm thick. At its slimmest part the Grand Era U985 is 7.9 mm, however, so take that as you will.

ZTE is planning on showing off a few other handsets soon, including the quad-core Grand Era V985 and the Grand Era LTE, as well as the lower-end Grand V970 and Grand U930. We'll be keeping an eye out for those.  The Grand Era U985 is due to launch in China within the next couple of days with full support for the local TD-SCDMA network.

It's a little hard to get especially excited about something just launching in China, and there doesn't seem to be a lot here that would make anyone seriously wish it was available stateside. Besides, how big of a deal is slimness at this point? Does a difference of a millimeter or two of thickness really matter to you?

Smartphones let work win out

Tonight, as my husband stands in our bedroom, fingers whirling across his smartphone and eyes glued to its tiny screen, I have no idea "where" he is. Is he checking the score of his beloved home team, or dealing with a rant from an indefatigable boss overseas? Is he working or home-ing, or both?
This melding of work and home, of course, is an old story. In 1999, I wrote an article about three generations of a Baltimore family and their work-life balance. Shattering my romantic views on what it was like to live a few easy steps from work -- literally over the store -- the family's elderly patriarch told me that his parents couldn't wait to move to the suburbs and put some distance between family and work. Their hardware business had shadowed their evenings and weekends, stealing peace. Decades later, the patriarch's restless, cell phone-toting, entrepreneurial son blamed the portability of work for his recent divorce.

Social Innovators of the Week: Jonathan Jackson & Vikram Kumar

Mobilising health care in resource-challenged nations...

This week I am featuring two social innovators for the price of one life changing social organisation.Jonathan Jackson (CEO) & Vikram Kumar (CMO) are the founders of Dimagi and their mobile health platform calledCommCare has just landed them the Schwab Foundation’s 2012 Social Entrepreneur Award at the World Economic Forum meeting in Tianjin, China.
Both Jonathan and Vikram were selected from a list of more than 1,000 global applicants for the prestigious award and now find themselves in an exclusive pot of 26 successful awardees (you can see all of the awardees here).
Let’s have a look at their award winning work.
CommCare
When Jonathan and Vikram originally founded Dimagi their mission was to integrate innovative technology into global public and private services in order to improve human health and well-being. I think CommCare is most definitely an excellent representation of this ethos.
CommCare is a mobile technology platform for community health workers in developing countries. The mobile phone app and web interface lets resource-challenged users to store and access patient information and monitor at-risk patients through mobile phones made available to remote health facilities.
Here is a nice infographic about the tech…..
So far the organisation have recorded 300,000 home visits! Take a bow Jonathan and Vikram because you are saving lives, the technology has literally helped mobilise health care workers all over the world (explore a mix of case studies at the bottom of this post).
Jonathan recently said this about the platform when he found out about the award acknowledgement:
We’ve been working in this field for a long time, and we strongly believe that taking a product platform approach to ICT projects is the key to building sustainable programs to expand the effective delivery of life saving interventions. We greatly appreciate the Schwab Foundations’ acknowledgement and support.”
The video below will help you understand in greater detail the work that Dimagi carry out in the community with their mobile health platform:

M2M Challenge 2012: can you create an M2M-based application good enough to win USD 5,000?

The Networked Society and a world dominated by machine-to-machine (M2M) connectivity is a lot closer than you might think. But what will we do with all those connections? If you have an M2M app idea, the inaugural global M2M Challenge, with a top prize of USD 5000, could help you play a role in changing the future of business.

The emergence and huge popularity of smartphones and tablets in recent years has shown the world that subscribers and businesses take to appealing apps like fish to water.

So imagine a world where there really are no limitations on the connectivity between machines – where apps help us to capitalize on fixed- or mobile-broadband-enabled M2M connectivity for personal, leisure or professional business reasons.

As enterprises increasingly look for M2M solutions, the M2M Challenge aims to unlock the imagination of developers, entrepreneurs and those working for businesses of all sizes involved in the M2M ecosystem, regardless of where they are in the world.

The concept is simple: submit a solution in any of the five competition categories that would improve business though innovative use of M2M connectivity. Ideas must be submitted by December 31, 2012. The categories are:

energy
security
healthcare
mobility (auto and transport)
consumer electronics and more.

Prize winners, and those behind other selected submissions, will have the chance to network with thought leaders and key influencers in M2M development.

The winner will be announced at the CeBIT IT Trade Fair in Hanover, Germany, in March 2013. Other competition details are available on the M2M Challenge homepage.

Ericsson and Swisscom are global sponsors of the competition alongside Telit and VARTA Microbattery. The competition is being run in association with the independent intelligence platform m2mapps.

Miguel Blockstrand, Head of Ericsson’s Product Line Device Communications, says huge numbers of new business-model opportunities are being opened up by M2M-based solutions.

“The transformative power of M2M connectivity for all sectors of business and society is on such a large scale that it really does have the potential to significantly change the future,” he says. “Given the potential numbers of M2M connections – Ericsson predicts a world of more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020 – we are still at a relatively early stage.

“The smartphone revolution has shown that some of the earliest mobile apps remain the most popular, so we are pretty confident that there are fabulous M2M app ideas are out there that can make their mark on business and society. This competition will help innovators to turn their vision into reality.

“Ericsson is dedicated to enhancing the M2M ecosystem. M2M apps are a crucial element of that ecosystem, alongside high-quality and dependable connectivity. That’s why we are committed to this competition and the long-term success of the M2M market.”

Ericsson will be represented on the judging panel, to be chaired by Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO of Beecham Research.
